Peoplesafe Supports Women’s Night Safety Charter

Posted: 21 May, 2024.

Peoplesafe is proud to announce its commitment to women’s safety by signing the Women’s Night Safety Charter.

Launched by the Mayor of London and delivered by Safer Business Network, the Women’s Night Safety Charter aims to improve how women feel when travelling, working and going out at night in London. It calls upon all 2,100 signatories, including major corporate organisations and retailers across London such as Tesco, Boots, McDonald’s, and every Premier League football club in London, to make changes that will have a positive impact.

The need for such initiatives is highlighted by a YouGov poll on sexual harassment in public spaces. This research found that a staggering 72% of respondents reported witnessing instances of sexual harassment. Equally concerning, 79% of women said they expected inappropriate comments, touching and behaviour on a night out toward them or their friends.

Funding from the Mayor provides support, training and resources to help signatories meet the seven pledges of the charter:

  1. Nominate a champion in your organisation who actively promotes women’s night safety
  2. Demonstrate to staff and customers that your organisation takes women’s safety at night seriously, for example through a communications campaign
  3. Remind customers and staff that London is safe, but tell them what to do if they experience harassment when working, going out or travelling
  4. Encourage reporting by victims and bystanders as part of your communications campaign
  5. Train staff to ensure that all women who report are believed
  6. Train staff to ensure that all reports are recorded and responded to
  7. Design your public spaces and workplaces to make them safer for women at night

As part of this commitment, Peoplesafe participated in the Women’s Night Safety Charter Summit in February, launching our latest safety feature: Travelsafe.

The app ensures peace of mind for individuals travelling alone, backed by a 24/7 professional control centre. Travelsafe can calculate how long a journey should take and generates an estimated arrival time alongside a timed alarm. If the user hasn’t reached their destination by the expected arrival time, the alarm is activated.

This comprehensive safety solution empowers organisations to proactively address employee’s safety concerns when travelling. We believe that by providing access to innovative safety solutions we can create a safer environment for all, regardless of gender.

CEO of Peoplesafe, Naz Dossa, commented:

“The Women’s Night Safety Charter is a hugely important initiative that underscores our collective responsibility to create safer, more inclusive spaces for women and girls.

At Peoplesafe, our commitment to this charter resonates deeply with our core values. By partnering with initiatives like this we hope to raise awareness of the risks faced by women and girls and provide practical solutions that empower people to feel safer and more secure in nighttime environments.”

Interim CEO of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, Emma Lingley-Clark,  added:

“As Chair of the Women’s Night Safety Charter Steering Group the Suzy Lamplugh Trust is delighted that Peoplesafe are signing up as signatories and committing to make changes that will have a positive impact on women’s safety. We would urge all organisations to champion this vital Charter and access the training and support to help them implement the key pledges.”

Night Czar, Amy Lamé, said:

“We’ve had such a positive reaction to the Women’s Night Safety Charter in London since it launched in 2018. Over 2,100 businesses and organisations are now signed up, with other cities across the UK and around the world adopting the model we started here in the capital. I’m delighted that Peoplesafe has joined the ever-growing network of organisations joining us to build a safer night time for women everywhere.”
