Dennis Eagle

Dennis Eagle, a global leader in the design and manufacture of refuse collection vehicles, is committed to providing high-quality solutions for waste management operations. Producing over 1,000 units annually for UK local authorities and private sector contractors, the company employs over 600 employees.

Safety and Efficiency Challenges

To fulfil their duties, Dennis Eagle’s service engineers often work in remote and high-risk environments where they face significant safety challenges. In response to these issues, the company looked for a comprehensive solution that could integrate vehicle camera systems, tracking, driver behaviour monitoring and lone worker protection into a single, effective system.

As Dave Nicholls, Service Operations Manager at Dennis Eagle comments,

“Our main priority is the welfare of our service engineers when they are working remotely and at high-risk locations,”

A Comprehensive Solution

To meet these goals, Dennis Eagle adopted an integrated fleet and video telematics system from Peoplesafe and SureCam. This solution seamlessly incorporates real-time video footage, location-based data and lone worker protection into one platform, to achieve the highest level of safety for their engineers both inside and outside their vehicles.

The joint solution combines the Peoplesafe lone worker app with SureCam’s video telematics platform, creating a robust video-enabled driver protection solution. When an alarm is activated, an alert is immediately raised to Peoplesafe’s 24/7 Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) and a two-way communication channel is opened. ARC controllers can also access the user’s Peoplesafe profile, GPS location and supporting video footage from their dashcam, which provides valuable context about the incident.

Using this information, the ARC follows the user’s predefined escalation plan, notifying designated contacts and, when necessary, bypassing 999 to directly access local emergency services. This setup provides complete driver protection and live incident management, with video and audio evidence for legal matters, enabling Dennis Eagle to proactively manage any emergency.

Dave Nicholls added,

“By bringing together our vehicle camera, tracking, driver behaviour, and lone worker protection requirements into an integrated technology solution, we can safeguard our team, while achieving a host of secondary efficiency, productivity, and cost improvements.”

Trial and Implementation

The initial phase of the project involved a trial at two sites with 28 service engineers, which was crucial for evaluating the solution in real-world conditions. The successful results from this trial demonstrated the system’s ability to significantly improve safety and operational efficiency.

Following these results, Dennis Eagle rolled out the solution to 112 vans operating across their nationwide network of 18 sites. This expansion included maintenance and breakdown response vehicles.

“We have been using vehicle tracking and lone worker technologies for a number of years, but we have now recognised the huge potential of an all-in-one, video-enabled solution to enhance driver protection and management.”

Enhanced Fleet Monitoring

The fleet now benefits from improved driver safety as well as increased information, with real-time alerts and comprehensive data on vehicle activity. Each Depot Manager receives video upload alerts of collisions, near misses and harsh driving events, with scheduled reports providing an overview of driver behaviour performance. Meanwhile, the operations team is using location-based data to better coordinate and respond to customer maintenance needs.

Improved Safety and Operational Efficiency

The integrated solution has significantly enhanced safety for Dennis Eagle’s service engineers, providing immediate support during emergencies and improving overall fleet management.
