Paramedics, firefighters and police officers are usually the first to assist someone if they have suffered an accident or injury. In most cases it’s difficult to find medical information or next of kin details from the victim, especially if they are unconscious. Additional medical information of the victim can be crucial in the event of an emergency and increases the chances of survival.

‘In Case of Emergency (ICE)’ was a program that was first established in the mid 2000’s and urged users to set up emergency contact information and save it as ICE on their mobile phones. Most people carry a mobile phone and this helped paramedics or the emergency services to easily access these vital information in an emergency.

Accessing contact information can be difficult due to passcode requirements on most smartphones. However, Apple launched the ‘Medical ID’ feature with the release of iOS 8 a few years back. This built in feature allowed iPhone users to set up emergency contact details and other important information such as; name, height, weight, blood type, allergies, medical conditions and many more. First responders will be able to access this from the locked screen of the user’s smartphone and provide a faster treatment with these vital information. Other operating systems, such as Android offer a similar feature or apps, which can display emergency information on the lock screen. General public, friends, relatives or even co-workers could also use this information to provide immediate assistance to someone as they wait for the emergency services to arrive.

Similarly, all users of our lone worker devices have the ability to list their these vital information during registration. Our easy to use online portal, Vision, allows the user to enter their personal details including their medical conditions and telephone numbers to contact in the event of an emergency. When a lone worker raises their alarm, our Controllers in the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) will have access to this pre-registered information and provide immediate assistance to them. They can also provide escalation procedures to be followed by our Controllers when an alarm is raised. For example; a  user who works in an aggressive or abuse environment, can provide this information and an escalation procedure of contacting the police if an alarm is ever raised. This reassures the user and helps them to work in confidence, knowing that help is only just a press away.  

Meanwhile, specific medical conditions like heart attacks, black outs or other unpredictable accidents could also result in the lone worker falling unconscious and not being able to raise an alarm by themselves. This is why using a device like the MicroGuard with a Man Down feature would be beneficial for these users as it will automatically raise an alarm if it detects a slip, trip or fall. Controllers will be able to see their medical conditions via the pre-registered information updated on Vision and summon the emergency services to the users exact location, thus providing immediate assistance to the user.
