Latest statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that the injury rate within the Oil & Gas sector is much lower when compared to sectors such as construction, transport or manufacturing. However, employers should still ensure they take every precaution to help ensure the safety of their employees, because the potential for a major accident is always present within this sector.
According to the latest health and safety report by Oil & Gas UK, 1 worker suffered a fatal injury and around 415 workers suffered a non-fatal injury whilst working. Strain and sprains are the most common type of injury suffered by employees within the oil and gas sector. Some of the common dangerous occurrences in the oil and gas sector are:
The dangerous occurrences listed above can cause serious injuries to employees. They could even suffer a fatal injury, if they were working alone and immediate medical assistance wasn’t provided in time. Lone working employees are possibly the most vulnerable within these sectors as they could face a variety of occupational hazards such as slips, trips, falls, cuts and even be exposed to toxic and flammable gases.
Most oil refineries, factories and offshore rigs are also considered as Explosive Hazardous Areas, where the atmosphere could be filled with flammable gases, mists, dusts, liquids or vapours that could lead to huge explosions. Due to the Explosive hazardous working environment, the lone working employees within these sectors are not allowed to carry their smartphone devices, as it could be a source of ignition. This is why organisations need to consider adopting ATEX rated devices such as the Twig EX, that’s highly durable and intrinsically safe, making it the ideal solution for lone workers within this sector.
Along with two-way audio, the device also comes with a ‘Man Down’ feature that will automatically raise an alarm in the event where the lone working employee slips, trips or falls unconscious.
